In reality though, today consisted of larking around in a park for most of the day, with a couple simulated emergency calls interrupting our fun.
The group split into groups, and we borrowed a few ambulances and went enroute to a nearby park area. This park wasn't wild bush land, but a nicely manicured grassy area with trees dotted around and it was right on the Swan River. We all tried our hand at throwing an Aussie Rules football around (It is pumped up so much it is like rock – no wonder the guys who play are so bad tempered). We did do some simulated emergency calls – as I say. It is a far cry from a manikin with a large spider on his chest.
When I was doing my paramedic training in Sussex, we did get promise
d some fun sessions, but that usually entailed not having to fill in another quiz about drugs, or only one run through of the Advanced Life Support instead of three. None of that was as fun as playing football in a park, stopping at lunch for a BBQ – laid on by the instructors – of steaks, foot long sausages (both chicken and beef varieties), all washed down with very cold pop. There was a load of food, which we couldn't finish.
Because of the great big load up, and the ambient temperature of 39, the instructors said there wasn't going to be anymore exercises, and we should go up to King's Park (higher elevation, lower temperature, and more shade trees). We piled in the ambulances, and drove up there,
admired the views, laughed and joked, had some ice cream, walked slowly under the shade trees, more views, more joking and laughing, and then we were told "It's about 2 o'clock, let's go back to base, wash the ambulances, and clear off home"
You don't need to tell a bunch of ambo's more than once to go home.
After school – if you can call it that – I had a load of errands to run, and then I chatted to Jane over the video SKYPE for about 1 hour 30 minutes. What marvellous idea that is.
I can't keep procrastinating the study any more. Maybe the quiz on Friday will go the way of today's afternoon session. I do hope so!!!!
